My friends set me up on a blind date as a joke

The warning bells went off instantly.
It had nothing to do with her.
It had everything to do with them.

I caught the rapid, toxic glances. The suppressed, smirking lips. The way one guy at the edge of the table practically leaned back like he was waiting for a theater curtain to rise.

The woman sitting next to my designated seat didn’t miss it either. Her name was Emma. She looked to be in her early thirties, possessing deep, expressive brown eyes, shoulder-length dark hair, and a navy dress that radiated absolute composure in a room that was actively trying to humiliate her.

Was she plus-size? Absolutely.
But that wasn’t the detail that locked my attention.

What struck me immediately was her total, unyielding stillness. It wasn’t the silence of someone who was intimidated or embarrassed. It was the calculated stillness of a woman who realized the sharks in the room had already written a cruel script for her—and she refused to give them the satisfaction of a performance.

Mark bounced out of his seat entirely too fast.
“Adam, my man, there he is!” He flashed that particular, superficial grin people use when they’re masking ugly intentions with polite manners.

Then came the grand gesture toward her: “Emma, Adam. Adam, Emma. We figured you two would really hit it off.”

The entire table went dead silent.
Deafeningly quiet.
In that exact heartbeat, the true nature of the invitation snapped into focus.

This wasn’t a blind date.
This was an ambush. A reaction experiment.

They were holding their breath to see if I would stumble. If my face would fall. If I would execute a forced, painful smile just to keep the peace and let the table feast on her discomfort.

Emma offered me a tight, guarded look.
She knew.
She probably knew the moment she arrived.

And right then, a cold wave of pure secondary embarrassment washed over me for every single hypocrite sitting at that table.

Without breaking eye contact with Mark, I gripped the chair next to Emma, pulled it out, and sat down.

Mark blinked, caught completely off guard.
His wife instantly looked away, suddenly fascinated by the ice cubes in her cocktail.
